The End Is Near! – Are You Ready?

by Randall Luebke RMA, RFC on November 2, 2011

The end of the year that is!

Please, pardon my “drama” but, truly, we have just entered the 4th quarter of 2011 and there are many issues you should consider and decisions you should make before December 31st rolls around.  For example:

  • Taxes & what you can do to reduce them
  • Retirement Planning, implementing a Roth conversions or maximum funding your 401k?
  • Investments – Reallocating your investments for safety and growth in trying to outmaneuver these crazy markets
  • Insurance, review your coverage, updating your beneficiaries
  • Health & Medical expenses – Reviewing your HSA account, calculate deductibles to ensure you make the best use of them
  • Personal Milestones – Changes in your life to your health, your work, and…
  • Changes in Your Family

Is Your Accountant a Historian?

In reality, most accounts and other tax professionals do NOT help you plan your taxes.  Their routine is generally; send out the tax packets in January or February, then schedule the appointments before April 15th.  If they don’t make your filing on time, then they file the automatic extension.

The problem is that anything you could have done to reduce your taxes needed to be done before the end of the year.  Truly, tax professionals are more like historians than tax advisers, recording what has already happened in the past rather than advising you about the choices and options you could make to change your future.  I’m not getting down on your tax preparer.  I’m just stating that this is generally the way things are done and there is a BIG problem with this process.

Another Problem and The Solution

Another problem is that we are so busy living our lives everyday that we put off doing the things today that could change our lives for the better tomorrow.  That is the positive way of looking at the situation.  The opposite is that we put off things until it is too late, then we suffer the consequences in the future.

Either way, I have a simple solution for you.  It’s a 5 minute review of the 2011 Last-Chance checklist.  A neat little checklist that highlights all the areas that you could or should address before the end of the year.
